SÃO PAULO – An estimated 70,000 Argentina fans indunated the centre of São Paulo on Tuesday to see their country beat Switzerland and secure their place in the quarterfinals.
Although the game was held in the Arena Corinthians, in the east of the city, many Argentinians travelled to the city – by plane, bus and car – without tickets, just to be part of their country’s campaign in the month-long football tournament.
The only goal of the knockout round game came in extra time from Argentina’s Angel Di Maria, who managed to net Lionel Messi’s pass.
But the side’s displays visibly worried its fans at the city center FIFA Fan Fest.
“It was the best game of my life, but it was really stressful!” Argentina fan Matías Ferreira, 26, from San Juán, told the Anadolu Agency (AA). “But it took me five days to get here and now I’m having the best party of my life.”
Javier Suiza, 43, from the Argentinian city of Virasoro-Corrientes, told AA he was confident his country could go all the way: “We’re going to get right to the final and see Brazil there. Who’s going to win? Argentina, of course. Luck – and Messi – are on our side!”
Argentina will now face Belgium on Saturday.
